Trajectory at very low mortality

Home / Open Questions / Trajectory at very low mortality

Background: Human longevity and the existence of a fixed biological lifespan limit is a long-standing, unresolved debate in demography and biogerontology.

Question / Future Work: The current framework’s extrapolation of mortality dynamics into very low mortality space (high life expectancy) depends on empirical observation from the Human Mortality Database (HMD), which does not contain data from populations that have achieved or surpassed potential theoretical lifespan limits. Future work should explore theory-driven trajectories into this unobserved very-low mortality space to better contribute to the debate on whether a fixed maximum human lifespan exists.
