Thermodynamic Interpretation Validation
Background: The practical applicability of theoretical concepts relies on datasets satisfying the strict requirements of the underlying mathematical framework.
Question / Future Work: The information-theoretic measure J(w) is used as a lower bound on thermodynamic irreversibility for coarse-grained geophysical data like ERA5. Further work is needed to bridge the gap between the theoretical equivalence of J(w) and entropy production rate, which holds only under strict stochastic thermodynamics assumptions not strictly met by real-world observations.
